Scott Englert – GKCOA President


GKCOA President Scott Englert took office in 2015 after having served as Vice President of Basketball from 2013-2015. In 2009 Scott began actively working in the association as an At-Large Director.  Scott will enter into his 16th year of officiating high school basketball and his ninth at the collegiate level. He currently works in the GLVC, MIAA and Heart Of America Conference’s.  In addition to his role as President with the association he is actively involved in the GKCOA Golf Tournament, GKCOA Day at the K and involving our officials with Special Olympics. 

“It is my hope and vision that the GKCOA continues to strive to be the best officials association in the country.  We have made significant improvements over the past few years and we are always looking for new and innovative ways to further the association,” says Englert.

Scott has worked the MSHSAA Final Four in 2016, 2013 and 2009 and is a veteran of numerous state playoff games over his career.  His father and mentor Bill Englert recently retired from working high school basketball in NW Missouri and completed 40 years of officiating. 

Scott has two children Payton (21) and Trenton (8) and resides in Kansas City.

Dave Lawson – GKCOA VP of Basketball

Dave Lawson is in his first tenure as Vice President of Basketball for the association.  A native of Liberty, Mo. Dave and his wife Shannon are active members in the community.  Dave recently completed his 18th year of officiating basketball and has been involved in the GKCOA Golf Tournament, Special Olympics and recently served as a Board Director in 2015-17.

“I’m honored to be able to lead the basketball division of one of the best officiating organizations in the country,” Dave says. “I look forward to continuing the success of what previous leadership has done”.

Dave graduated from Central Missouri State University where he played football for the Mules.  Dave has been an agent with American Family for over 20 years and in his spare time likes to play golf as much as humanly possible.




Jim Rusconi – GKCOA VP of Football

Jim RusconiVice President of Football Jim Rusconi is one of the most senior members of the GKCOA in not only years of service to high school athletics, but post season assignments as well.  His officiating career began in 1963 as both a football and basketball official while a freshman at Rockhurst High School.

Jim became a registered official with the state of Missouri in 1969 and since that time has worked numerous playoff games including the Class 1 state championship in 2003.  Before knee injuries forced Jim to retire in 1998 he was a highly decorated official on the hardwood. He worked numerous MSHSAA playoff games and in 1983 he officiated the National Christian College Division II Championship tournament.  In 1998 Jim was appointed as a MSHSAA basketball mechanics observer a position that he still holds.

A member of the GKCOA since 1973 Jim has been given many awards including the “Steve Connor Football Award”, “Dub Gleason Basketball Award”, “Bill Pickett Lifetime Achievement Award” and honored by MSHSAA for 25 years of service.

Ken Corum – GKCOA VP Volleyball

Ken Corum is serving in his second term as Vice President of Volleyball for the GKCOA.  Ken has officiated volleyball and basketball in the Kansas City area since relocating from eastern Iowa nearly 20 years ago.

Ken has been selected to officiate two state volleyball tournaments in Kansas (2000, 2001) and one in Missouri (2015), along with line judging in the NCAA Division I volleyball tournament (2012-2016).  In addition, he is a long time club volleyball referee, working at the USAV junior national championships in New Orleans during the summer of 2015.

He recently completed his Doctorate and teaches in the Math Department at Staley High School. Ken lives in the Northland with his teenage son, Murphy,

Cheryl Aston – GKCOA Secretary

Cheryl was elected in 2011 to serve her second term  as Secretary.  She has been a member of GKCOA since 2003 as a volleyball official and began officiating basketball as well in 2010.  Cheryl has assisted the volleyball group with many duties including organizing and scheduling all the volunteers for the MSHSAA State Volleyball Championships (2008-10).cheryl head shot

Cheryl and her husband Bob have a son Jason and a daughter Kristen.  Jason and his wife, Katie, have a son Jack making Cheryl a very proud grandma.  Kristen is getting married in the fall.  Bob and Cheryl enjoy camping, canoeing, kayaking, and gardening.  They are also a foster home for Westie Rescue of Missouri and have helped so many little Westies find homes.  Cheryl is a State Certified General Real Estate Appraiser for FCS Financial.  She is a member of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA) and served as president in 2010-11.

 GKCOA Treasurer


Brian Verman has been on the board since 2009 and is currently serving his fifth term as Treasurer for GKCOA. He began officiating high school sports in 1992 as a MSHSAA basketball official and started officiating volleyball in 2000. Brian has been an active member of GKCOA for most of those years, but retired from basketball officiating in 2007 after 15 years on the court. Brian continues to officiate volleyball where he has also served on the GKCOA volleyball committee since 2004 handling the finances and membership records for the volleyball division.  Brian was selected to officiate the MSHSAA Volleyball Championships in 2012 and 2014.

A graduate of KC Lutheran High School, Brian is employed with CoreFirst Bank as Assistant Vice President of Risk Management. Brian has also been active in Scouting for over 35 years and is currently serving as Cubmaster of Pack 4282 in Independence, MO.

Tad Malone

Tad has been officiating basketball, football, volleyball and soccer for over 20 years in the State of Missouri.  A veteran of multiple post-season assignments Tad has worked two State Finals in football (one as Crew Chief) and numerous post-season basketball assignment.  One of his primary goals is to help develop and train the next generation of officials.  “We need to get younger officials involved,” says Tad. “It’s imperative we continue to foster relationships with our young people and show them how rewarding officiating can be”.

Tad resides in Kansas City, Mo. with his wife Missy and have three boys (Kyle, Justin and Sam).  This is Tad’s second tenure on the GKCOA Board as he previously held the position from 2015-17. 

Tad has been with the KCMO Fire Department for 14 years.





Justin Wieberg

Justin started out officiating basketball in college through intramurals at Missouri State University; He received his Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) certification in basketball and baseball while doing so.  The 2017-2018 season will be his 10th year as a high school official and 7th working in the college ranks.  

Justin currently works in the Heart of America, MIAA, KJCCC and GLVC conferences.  He continues to refine his officiating skills by attending multiple camps and clinics during the off-season as he strives for his goal of becoming a Division I official.

“Throughout this process, I have learned a great deal about officiating, as well as being a wholesome person.  I am humbled to give back to the game that has taught me so much,” Justin said. “As a board member of the GKCOA, I will strive to continue learning as well as work diligently for and with my fellow officials.  I take great pride in everything I do and will make the most out of this experience.”

Justin and his wife Jenna reside in Lee’s Summit and have two children (Cooper and Kinley).
